Climate change is already shaping Victoria’s landscapes, water systems and communities. Victoria’s Catchment Management Authorities are working together to respond — building resilience, supporting regional communities and protecting the natural environments we all depend on. The VIC Catchments Climate Hub brings this work together, connecting science, partnerships and practical action to help create a climate-ready future for Victoria.
Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs)
Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) are responsible for the integrated planning and coordination of land, water and biodiversity management in each catchment and land protection regions. Each Catchment Management Authority is structured to maximise community involvement in decision-making. CMAs were established in 1997 under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 and also have powers and functions under the Water Act 1989.
Each CMA is subject to two Statements of Obligations (SoO), one under the Water Act and one under the Catchment and Land Protection Act. The SoO issued under the Water Act states that in performing is functions and providing its services the Authority shall recognise the importance of climate change as a challenge to the management of natural assets.
Climate Change Forum
The climate change forum is a collaboration of the nine CMAs and Melbourne Water. Representatives from each organisation meet quarterly to enhance knowledge, share ideas and collectively tackle climate change challenges. The climate change forum is coordinated by the CMA statewide climate change coordinator and regularly features guest speakers.
CMA Statewide Climate Change Coordinator
A part-time Climate Change Coordinator is shared across the CMAs, employed by Goulburn Broken CMA. The Climate Change Coordinator is a starting point for climate change queries, engagement and partnerships with the CMAs.
